Public Hearing Scheduled On Omaha's Cigarette Tax Proposal

A public hearing is planned today (Tuesday) in Omaha on a 35-cents per pack tax on cigarettes as a way of helping pay for a new cancer research center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The tax would generate $35 million, which would go along with Douglas County's commitment of $5 million for the project. Governor Heineman doesn't like it. He doesn't think it's fair for citizens to tax smokers to help pay for the $370 million cancer research center because it's already getting state tax dollars.
