Peter Muhly/AFP/Getty ImagesThe fact that Adam Lambert will be singing with rock legends Queen this summer has been a much-talked-about subject, but Saturday, fans will get to see what all the fuss is about.
Adam and Queen will be performing this Saturday in Kiev, Ukraine, as part of a charity event dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Elton John is also on the bill for the show, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people to Kiev's main square.
The Kiev show is one of six in total that Adam will perform with Queen this summer, as he assumes the frontman role that's remained officially vacant since the band's lead singer Freddie Mercury died in 1991 of an AIDS-related illness. A variety of other singers have performed with Queen since then, and the American Idol alum knows how lucky he is to have the opportunity this time around.
"For me, personally, I think I'm gonna look back on this in years to come and kind of think, 'Wow, what a treat. What an honor to be able to be asked to sing with legends,'" he tells ABC News Radio. "Their music is iconic and Freddie Mercury, for me, is obviously one the the very great performers in history and a definite idol for me."
Adam says the opportunity to "get up there and to pay homage" to Mercury, and "pay respect to his memory as a performer" is something he says he'll remember "for the rest of my life."
Adam also sees the Queen team-up as an educational experience. "I...think that I'm gonna learn a lot from it," he tells ABC News Radio. "You know, working with [Queen].... these guys have been in the business a long time and they've seen a lot and they've...been through time and trends...I think there's something really magical about that."
Queen songs are among the most difficult rock tunes to sing, because of their intricate arrangements and wide vocal range. So, are there any Queen songs he's just not going to attempt to do? Adam laughs, "There are a few that are daunting, let me tell ya! And then there's some that I've sung many times before. So, I'm excited for the challenge."
This isn't the first time Adam and Queen have performed together, of course: They first teamed up on the American Idol season-eight finale where Adam faced off against Kris Allen and lost. Adam and Queen also performed together in 2011 at the MTV European Awards.
