Billie Joe Armstrong Says Green Day's Album Trilogy Sounds "Somewhere Between AC/DC and Early Beatles"

Eugene Gologursky/Getty ImagesFans of Green Day can expect the band to explore some new creative avenues on their upcoming trilogy of albums, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré!

“We're changing the guitar sound,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong tells Rolling Stone.  “We're not going with the big Marshall-amp thing.  We wanted something punchier, more power pop -- somewhere between AC/DC and the early Beatles.  This is just a crazy idea that happens to be working really well.”

Armstrong added that the decision to create three albums was motivated by the fact that the band has written a large amount of new material.  “The songs just kept coming,” reveals the singer.  “One day, I sprung it on the others: ‘Instead of Van Halen I, II and III, what if it's Green Day I, II and III and we all have our faces on each cover?’”

You'll get the chance to check out Green Day's new sound for yourselves when ¡Uno! hits stores on September 25.  The other albums, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré!, will arrive in stores on November 13, 2012 and January 15, 2013 respectively.
