Kevin Mazur/WireImage via ABCKaty Perry's new video for "Wide Awake" is supposed to officially premiere on MTV on Tuesday night, but it's already hit the web. The fairy-tale themed clip -- the one that's meant to be the final chapter in her album Teenage Dream -- seems to tell the story of how Katy made it through the ups and downs of fame and lost love, emerging with her inner self intact.
In the clip, we see Katy finishing the video for "California Gurls," the first hit from Teenage Dream. She goes into her dressing room, looks into the mirror and bam! She's in a fairy-tale world, looking all goth and haunted with purple hair. Katy makes her way through a maze where she bites into a possibly-poisoned strawberry -- no doubt a metaphor for the "forbidden fruit" of fame and fortune. All of sudden, light shoots out of her chest, just like in her "Firework" video, and illuminates the sky.
Then, Katy meets a little girl who's supposed to represent her as a child. Hand in hand, they make their way down a corridor which ends in a mirror, which reflects the images of paparazzi. But the camera flashes become too much for the pair, and the mirror explodes. Next, we see the girl pushing a crazy-looking Katy in a wheelchair through the halls of what appears to be an insane asylum. They're confronted by two minotaurs -- half-men, half-bull. As they approach, little girl Katy stomps on the floor, sending out a wave of magic that defeats them. Cured, Katy gets up out of her wheelchair and the pair run hand in hand into a beautiful garden.
In the garden, we see a handsome prince astride a horse. Then, he comes toward Katy, but he puts his hand behind his back, fingers crossed, indicating that he's a lying so-and-so. An angry Katy punches the prince in the face, and he goes flying. Katy and little girl Katy exchange a high-five, and they embrace -- they're suddenly on a normal street in a normal suburb. Little girl Katy puts something in grown-up Katy's hand and rides away on a bike with a "Katheryn" license plate. Grown-up Katy opens her hand...
...And we're back in the dressing room where we started. Katy, now dressed in one of her stage costumes from her California Dreams tour, opens her hand to reveal a butterfly, who flies away as she watches, amazed. We next see Katy rising up on a lift to the stage, ready to perform her hit "Teenage Dream." And she lived happily every after...we hope.
The official premiere will take place Tuesday night on MTV at 7:35 p.m. ET, and Katy will sit for a 30-minute interview on MTV.com right after that.
