Donations given to the Humane Society of the United States are not helping local pet shelters. The Opinion Research Corporation found that of the $376 million spent from 2009 to 2011 by the H.S.U.S., less than 1% went to grants to support local pet shelters. In 2010, the Capital Humane Society in Lincoln received a $2,500 grant. Grand Island's Humane Society received a $2,500 grant last year, but no grants have been given in Nebraska this year from the H.S.U.S. So, where is the money going? The investigation found that it went for salaries, lobbying, pension plans, advertising, fundraising and other non-pet shelter expenses.
